Torque: How Does It Work?

As you research your next new Ford, you may notice two common power ratings: horsepower and torque.

Most of us are familiar with the idea of horsepower. It's the most common power number referenced by auto manufacturers and is easily compared to ratings from other cars. It's a slight oversimplification to call it a straightforward power rating, but it works for comparisons nonetheless.

Torque is a bit more mysterious. What is torque's application? How is it produced? How is it useful when shopping for a new Ford?

The simple explanation for torque is that it's the twisting force an engine produces that makes its way to the wheels. It's often described as the force that creates the feeling of thrust or propulsion.

While peak horsepower is almost always achieved high in an engine's rev range, max torque can occur at virtually any RPM, depending on the engine's design or purpose. This means torque is heavily favorable in vehicles used for towing or carrying heavy loads, like the Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty. Because it's able to reach its maximum power at low speeds, torque is more useful moving heavy loads.
